How in Rome to see the Pope at work, and in Venice – to avoid large expenses and crowds of tourists

Italy is a blessed country for tourists, because it is beautiful in itself, and here you can easily do without guides: just wander around the unfamiliar streets and get incomparable pleasure. But we still decided to make a small guide to the most visited cities, so that the impression would be the most complete.

The eternal City

1. In Rome, you will surely visit the Colosseum. Taking pictures at the walls of this magnificent building and looking inside is a must have for anyone who has come to Italy. Well, when the pictures are taken, take a walk to the Monti fashion district, where a fantastic “city market” takes place every weekend. Landmark – Grand Hotel Palatino. Here you will find a lot of interesting things: from works of modern art and creations of leading designers to vintage clothes, furniture and household items. The many trendy things you can find here make the Mercato Monti the perfect place for a weekend getaway.

2. The second must-see place in Rome is the Vatican. Of course, you will see the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica, but there is nothing more interesting than to be in this place when the Pope goes to the balcony of the Papal residence and reads a brief catechism. Regardless of whether you are religious or not, whether you belong to any denomination or not, this spectacle leaves no one indifferent. At that moment, when the pope reads the Angelus prayer (and this happens every Sunday at 11:50 a.m.), some special grace descends to St. Peter’s Square, which is simply impossible not to feel.

3. After the Vatican you can go on foot to roam the Trastevere. This is an incredibly colorful and purely “Italian” place with cobbled streets, dilapidated buildings, street musicians playing at a restaurant … By the way, this is where you should have lunch.

4. Order something typically Roman. For example, artichokes or Cacio e Pepe, a simple pasta dish seasoned with pecorino romano and lots of black pepper. Also try Bucatini all’Amatriciana – pork and onion in tomato sauce and spaghetti alla carbonara with egg, pancetta and pecorino romano sauce.

5. Climb the hill of Gianicolo. This is not quite a tourist place, because it is located at some distance from the city center and cannot be ranked as the well-known “seven hills” of Rome, but the view that opens from it is simply breathtaking. You will make your best photos on the domes and spiers of the eternal city here.

City of lovers

1. Find your gondolier. Riding a gondola is a must in the program in Venice. Just do not rush to implement it in the first minutes of your stay in this romantic city. Take a walk, look around, ask the price. Soon you will realize that prices vary and someone in a not-so-busy place (if you’re lucky, you can find one) will offer you much cheaper services. Sailing along the Grand Canal under the Rialto Bridge, kiss your gondolier – not for his generosity, but for your own luck in love affairs.

2. Come to Piazza San Marco early in the morning to avoid crowds of tourists. If you enter with the faithful at the Mass of the morning, then you can calmly see the golden shimmering mosaics of the cathedral. Just try not to look like a tourist, take care of appropriate clothing to get lost in the crowd and not cause the carabinier at the entrance of unnecessary questions.

3. Do not forget about lunch, because not paying special attention to Venetian cuisine is a crime. You should start it with a glass of Prosecco (sounds great, right?), Which is produced here in Veneto. Looking ahead, let’s say that the “official” Venetian cocktail Aperol Spritz is also prepared from prosecco. Its composition is prosecco, aperol, sparkling water and a slice of orange on the edge of the glass. A plate with a bruschetta should definitely be nearby. Other dishes that you must definitely try:

scampi alla venetian – shrimp dressing of olive oil and lemon juice,
risotto al nero di seppia – black risotto, which he gets because of cuttlefish ink, a traditional Venetian ingredient,
pasta with squid and seafood Caparossoi a Scota Deo. “Scota Deo” means “hot fingers” because a lot of pepper is added to this dish.

5. Continuing the gastronomic theme, we say that in Venice it is a sin to miss not only lunch time, but also the aperitif, which begins here from 18:00 to 20:00. Then you should go to bacaro, this is such a bar.
