Sicily Autonomous Region – the cradle of civilization

Sicily is Italy’s largest region. It includes the island of Sicily and a number of islands. It is here that the active volcano Etna is located, which periodically reminds of itself. Despite the fact that the island is predominantly hilly, there are also the so-called Sicilian Apennines – a mountain range, and there are plains – a little more than 10% of the island’s area. The island of Sicily is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina. At its narrowest point, the width of this strait is just over three kilometers. You can get to Sicily from the peninsula in about twenty minutes by ferry.

The island is washed immediately by three seas – the Mediterranean, Ionian and Tyrrhenian. The distance to the African coast is about 140 kilometers. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, the temperature in the summer rises to +26 degrees, and in winter it rarely drops below +10. Sicily boasts the largest number of sunny days of the year among Mediterranean European resorts.

The water temperature also pleases tourists: in winter it is about +16 degrees, and in summer it rises to +27, which means that in May you can open the swimming season, ending it by November. The plant world of Sicily is quite diverse. On the mountainous slopes here you can see lavender bushes, rosemary, oleander, pistachios and much more. Several state reserves will allow you to fully enjoy the beauty of wildlife. But on the small islands around Sicily that are part of the region, pristine landscapes of the Mediterranean have been preserved that will surprise tourists and travelers with their extraordinary beauty.

Sicily is an autonomous region that has not only its flag and coat of arms, but also a parliament. The capital of the island is the city of Palermo. Despite some geographical isolation, the island’s infrastructure is well developed. Souvenir shops, boutiques and shopping centers will make your shopping unforgettable.

Do not forget to bring coral jewelry, souvenirs from the frozen lava of the volcano and ceramics from Sicily. As for Sicilian cuisine, it incorporated elements of not only Italian culture, but also Arabic and Greek. Sicilians use a lot of spices and love to cook meat, such as rabbit or pork.
